Jourdanton Little League Minutes
January 6, 2005

The meeting was called to order at approximately 7:04 p.m.

Eight Board Members were present to include: Rebecca Alviso, Mark Gawlik, Liesl Hons, Becky Gonzalez, David Alviso, Rita Munoz, Oscar Munoz and Tammy Blalock.

Rita Motioned to accept the minutes of the December 7, 2004 meeting as presented. Mark 2nd.  Motion carries unanimously.

Becky G. presented the Treasurer’s Report as a balance of $5,276.66 – checking, and $11,104.68 – cd balance. Tammy Motioned to accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented.  Rebecca 2nd.  Motion carries unanimously. Liesl advised that the $2,500 donation from the City of Jourdanton would be available for pick-up on January 18.

The two coordinators were not present to discuss scheduling any coaching clinics.  Rita advised that she has information on setting up our own clinics. Louie, from the Fast Pitch Academy said that he would run a softball clinic for $20 an hour, showing various softball techniques.  Tammy suggested trying to obtain someone from the Hack Shack to conduct the baseball side of things.  Liesl suggested making these clinics open to other towns and charging a small fee to recover the costs to have the clinics “professionally” demonstrated.

Rita also advised that she had obtained information on a decal fundraiser. Liesl advised that she did ask Boyd Grimshaw for an example and price sheet, but he was unable to deliver due to a short notice.  The preliminary plan is to have a decal fundraiser and have order sheets available to parents on Opening Day.

Grady advised the Board that the District Office would be changing the way it raises funds to cover their costs of operation: ie. hosting clinics, travel, paper production, etc.  The fees assessed to each local league within the District would be $2.00 per player based on the amount of registered players from the previous season obtained from Little League, Inc. If a local league hosted a tournament, there are 2 proposals in the works. 1 – no fee, 2 – the fee per player drops to $1.50 per player and the tournament will cost $600 to host.  The District’s recourse, should a local league not abide by these new changes, would be that their teams would not be allowed to participate in any tournament level play and that the District would ask for the revocation of the local league’s charter.

Grady also advised not to count the rule approved at the last Little League Congress allowing a President to coach or manage a team.  He said the rule is currently under review and most likely would be revoked.

Grady advised that an umpire and score keeper’s clinic has been scheduled in Hondo.  On Feb. 4 (6:00 p.m.) and Feb. 5 (9:00 a.m.) the umpire clinic would be held at Wools School in Hondo. Participants must be present for both days. On Feb. 5, the score keeper’s clinic would be held at 9:00 a.m.  He advised that there is not cost for these clinics and for participants to bring their current rulebooks.

Grady advised that there is a major change coming down from Williamsport that affects the bat length/weight ratio. He suggested not buying a large amount of bats that have drastic length/weight ratios, because they will be illegal in the near future.

Grady advised that Little League, Inc. is pushing for local leagues to become incorporated to prevent individual board members from being named as parties in law suits. This is not mandatory at this time.

Grady advised that any and all paperwork needs to be turned into District before April 30 this year. Advised that Barbara set this new deadline because last year was so hectic around the deadline.

Rita advised that she would like to hold try-outs sometime the week of February 21 – 26, 2005. Rita suggested dividing the try-outs into more age specific groups and holding try-outs on the baseball and softball fields, also separating those players.  Grady advised Rita that she should set up the try-outs and the two respective coordinators should be responsible for actually handling the try-outs.  Her presence should only be necessary to ensure that the try-outs are being carried out per her instructions.

Rita set the following dates:

February 26, 2005 - 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. - ages 6 & 7
                           2:00 – 4:00 p.m. - ages 8 to 10
                           4:00 – 5:00 p.m. - ages 11 & up
February 27, 2005 - 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. - ages 6 & 7
                           2:00 – 4:00 p.m. - ages 8 to 10
                           4:00 – 5:00 p.m. - ages 11 & up

  • Age 6 only try-out if they played t-ball last year.
  • Baseball players on BB field, softball players on SB field.

Should anyone not be able to attend a try-out date, Rita will consider scheduling a try-out date in March.

Rita will print flyers regarding try-outs to hand-out at registration.

Oscar declared, January 8, 2005 a JLL Board Work Day beginning at 2:00 p.m. to begin getting ready for try-outs.  Oscar suggested that we burn the fields so that they are pretty and green by try-outs.  Mark advised that he would notify David Prasifka, Fire Chief – Jourdanton Volunteer Fire Department, of our plans to have a controlled burn on this day.

Liesl advised that the Sam’s Club cards need to be updated.  Rebecca is taking care of this.

Rita asked that we really enforce the residence requirements at our registration dates – ie. that only one utility bill could be used to verify residence, as opposed to using three utility bills as three different sources of documentation.  Rita advised that entire requirements and sources of documentation are available at littleleague.org.

The next meeting was set for February 8, 2004 at 6:30 p.m.

David A. Motioned to adjourn the meeting.  Mark 2nd. Motion carried unanimously.  Meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:37 p.m.
