JOURDANTON – The Jourdanton Little League will be doing more than just opening the 2007 Little League season on Saturday. Making room for more is a must to commemorate and dedicate this special season.
And the season is special this year because since being chartered in 1957, the Jourdanton Little League is proud to announce its 50th year to play this year. Saturday will mark opening ceremonies with a parade at 9:30 a.m. to kickoff the days events.
17 teams from the Jourdanton Little League will be on floats through the parade along with invited local elected officials. Also in the parade will be two former managers in the first year of little league in 1957 and they include former manager Henry Schorsch and former manager Danny Matocha.
The parade will begin on Campbell St. at the Community Center and travel south, then take a right on Peach St. and then traveling across Hwy. 16 past Jourdanton High School and around the back to La Parita Rd. It will then take a left on La Parita and travel back to Hwy. 16 and back south towards the Jourdanton LL Fields.
Little League games are set to begin at 11 a.m. and last through the evening. There will be balloon releases throughout the day and league officials are still waiting for word on a possible flyover from an aircraft.
A time-capsule will also be buried in front of the concessions stands and finished off with a monument donated by Hurley Monument Co. A 50th Anniversary pin has been made and will be presented to all players, managers and coaches as well as anyone who attends on behalf of Jourdanton’s first year of Little League in 1957.
All local businesses are invited to participate in the parade. Those interested can call Tammy Blalock at 769-3155.
If weather becomes a factor, a rainout date is set for Saturday, March 31. In 1957, four teams played in the league and included the Braves (Eugene Harrison), Giants (Schorsch), Red Sox (Pete Schorsch) and Yankees (Matocha). The President was C.W. McAllister, V.P. Nolan Brown, Secretary Charlie Belicek Jr., Treasurer E.W. Morris and Player Agent Paul Breitkreutz.
The 2007 officers include President Tammy Blalock, V.P. David Soward, Secretary Michelle Eisenhauer, Treasurer Jennifer Carrasco, Player Agent Rita Munoz, Umpire Coordinator Melinda Ruiz, Baseball/Softball Coordinator Tricia Taylor, Fundraising Coordinator Karen Pesek, Equipment & Safety Officer Gerald Zuhlke, Concessionaire Rebecca Alviso, Asst.
