03/20/2004 Jourdanton Little League News
A Night to Remember
On March 20, Jourdanton Little League officially kicked off its season with opening day. The opening ceremonies lasted all day. Beginning the opening day was a helicopter fly-by courtesy of Joseph Meyer of Flying J Services and Phillip Hindes of Hindes Helicopter Services. Fabian Fonseca also provided a fly-by in his restored L-Bird. The fly-by was a perfect beginning for a nearly perfect day.
Throughout the day, first pitches were thrown by Henry Schorsch, Jr., Vicki Martinez, Danny Matocha, City Secretary Delores Cordova, Assistant Fire Chief Jay Fotjik, Chief of Police Ronnie Lawson, City Manager Dan Nick, Chief Deputy Sheriff David Soward and Council Members Randy Shearrer, Marty Prasifka, Darrell Richter and Larry Pryor. The league’s president, Liesl Hons, provided a public thank you to Mayor Tammy Clark for the generous $3000 contribution made to the league from the City.
Mr. Henry Schorsch, Jr., who is an original founder of the Jourdanton Little League, was quoted as saying, ”Tonight, I watched the best game ever played on this field (JLL North Field). The fact that is was on opening day and not at the end of the season, makes it unbelievable that the fielding and pitching could be that developed.” Mr. Schorsch was referring to the Giants vs. A’s game, which lasted about two hours and finally ended when the A’s outscored the Giants 2 to1 in the 8th inning. The starting pitchers for the A’s (Kody Taylor) and the Giants (Anthony Lopez) ended the 6th inning with 17 strikeouts each.
Ending the day, was a small firework display, provided courtesy of Wilson Blalock. This opening day ceremony only marked the 47th anniversary of the Jourdanton Little League, but was well deserved due to the 2004 Capitol Improvement Project.
Also deserving of the league’s thanks were Lyssa Campos for singing the National Anthem, the Jourdanton Volunteer Fire Department on standby for the fireworks, Fat Cowboys for donating the $50 gift certificate door prize, Rita and Oscar Munoz for donating the opening day programs which doubled as the raffle tickets, Tri-City Funeral Home for providing tents for shade, Atascosa Dodge for the oil and lube fundraiser and the helium and balloons and Super S Foods of Jourdanton for providing the players’ drinks.
Once again, Jourdanton Little League thanks Justin Contracting and their employees for ensuring 300 players would be able to participate on opening day and be proud of the new playing field, for paying attention to detail and going the extra mile to ensure all bases were covered.
In addition, the League also thanks Waste Management, Suzanne and Pat Schuchart, Marcos Reyes and Scott Smoot for donating their time and/or materials to the league.
Lastly, the league would like to especially thank the many business and individuals who helped with our 2004 Capitol Improvement Project. Without all of the generous efforts made by these people, our opening day would not have been possible. A detailed list of the Capitol Improvement Project sponsors can be found on the league’s web site at www.jourdantonlittleleague.com.
In addition, and not to be forgot, are the many board members and their spouses who stayed many extra hours on opening day, and the last three months, to ensure everything went smoothly and that the Jourdanton Little Leaguers experienced a day not to be soon forgot.
